All Year Round Sun Protection

Often when people hear “sun protection” they think of the scorching summer heat and visits to the beach. However, being sun smart should be a year round routine as UV rays can inflict their damage even in the cooler months. Even when the weather is cool and overcast, sunburns are possible as UV rays penetrate through the clouds. So what can you do to be sun smart all year round?

Be Informed

It is important to keep up to date with the latest weather forecasts to better prepare yourself in terms of clothing, protection and activities. While sunburns are caused by UV rays and not by temperature, you should not assume cooler weather means it is safer, and it pays to do extra searches to determine the UV Index.

UV Index

Generally, sun protection should be carried out on most occasions. When the UV Index is low (1-2) sun protection is generally not necessary unless you plan on spending time outdoors for extended periods. Whether the UV Index is moderate (3-5), high (6-7), very high (8-10) or extreme (11+) will determine the best course of action in regards to protecting your eyes and skin.

Ways to Protect Yourself

Clothing – wearing sun protective clothing is a great way to minimise your risk of sunburn and skin damage. Clothing options can include long sleeve tops, shirts, suits, shorts and even shoes. There are a range of sizes and designs available to suit your needs, with options for babies right through to adults.

Sunscreen – Applying sunscreen should be a regular routine and should be applied 20 minutes before going outdoors. It should be reapplied every two hours, after swimming or after strenuous exercise for adequate protection.

Shade – While outdoors, seek shade whenever you can and limit your sun exposure.

Limit outdoor activity when UV is high – When UV levels are high, try to limit your outdoor activity. As UV is usually at its peak around midday, try and do outdoor activities early in the morning or late afternoon.

Use a combination of protective methods – it is important to combine the above methods of protection rather than purely depending on one.
